Welding training with WIOA

Welding programs are hands-on, relatively short and offered at many community and technical colleges, which makes them a common WIOA choice. Here is how to set one up.

The short answer

WIOA can pay for welding training at programs on your state's eligible training provider list when your local area funds welding. Depending on local policy, it may also help with gear, tools and certification test fees through supportive services. Ask your American Job Center which welding programs it approves.

How to get welding school funded

  1. Look at the jobs first

Welding work ranges from manufacturing and construction to pipelines and shipyards. Ask local employers and your career planner which processes and certifications they want.

  2. Go to your job center

Ask for WIOA training services and say you are interested in welding. Find your center with the CareerOneStop locator.

  3. Find approved programs

Search the WIOA-Eligible Training Program Finder for welding. Community and technical colleges often have several options.

  4. Compare and choose

Look at booth time, processes taught (such as stick, MIG, TIG and flux-cored), certification testing, schedule and job placement.

  5. Ask about gear and test fees

Helmets, gloves, jackets, boots and certification tests add up. Ask whether the training account covers them or whether supportive services can.

Ask which welding certifications local employers want before you choose a program.

Certifications

Many welding jobs ask applicants to pass a weld test to a specific code. Some programs include certification testing; others prepare you to test separately. Ask the school which tests are included and which codes they cover, and ask employers which ones they use. Federal WIOA rules do not require a particular welding certification, so let local hiring needs guide you.
