The short answer

WIOA is a federal job training program run through local American Job Centers. It can pay an approved school or employer for your training if you qualify and your area has funds. You apply at the job center, not online with a school, and rules such as training caps vary by state and local area.

Common questions

Is WIOA free?

WIOA services cost you nothing. If you qualify for training and your area has funds, WIOA pays the approved provider directly, up to the local cap. If a program costs more than the cap, you may need another source, such as a Pell Grant.

Do I have to pay WIOA back?

No. WIOA training funds are not a loan. Ask your center about its policies if you drop out, and be careful with any separate loan or payment plan a school offers.

Who is eligible for WIOA?

Adults 18 and older (with priority for low-income people, public assistance recipients and people with basic skills gaps), dislocated workers, and youth 14 to 24 with certain barriers. To get training, a job center must also find that you need it to reach self-sufficient wages.

Where do I apply for WIOA?

At your local American Job Center. Use the CareerOneStop American Job Center Finder to locate one. Your state may call it CareerSource, Workforce Solutions, PA CareerLink, OhioMeansJobs, NCWorks, Michigan Works! or another name.

Can I do WIOA training online?

Sometimes. Online or hybrid programs can be on a state's eligible training provider list. Whether your area funds them depends on local policy.

Can WIOA pay for CDL training?

Often yes, if the school is on your state's eligible provider list and the federal Training Provider Registry, and your area funds truck driving. See the CDL guide for details.

Can WIOA pay for nursing school?

It can pay for approved healthcare programs such as nursing assistant, LPN or other programs on the provider list. Longer programs like an RN degree may only be partly covered because of local caps.

Can I choose any school?

You choose, with your career planner, from programs on your state's eligible training provider list that lead to in-demand jobs.

What if I am denied?

Ask for the reason in writing and what would change the answer. You can ask about a different funding stream, a different program, or a waiting list. Every state has a grievance procedure for WIOA programs if you believe a rule was applied wrongly.

Does WIOA pay me while I am in training?

Not usually as wages, unless you are in on-the-job training or paid work experience. Some areas offer needs-related payments or supportive services such as transportation help.

Can I use WIOA twice?

There is no single federal lifetime limit, but local policies often limit repeat training, and you must again be found in need of training. Ask your job center.

Is this website part of the government?

No. WIOA Program Guide is an independent guide, not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Labor or any state workforce agency. We do not take applications.
